In its effort to stay afloat during tough economic times, the U.S. Postal Service has identified 677 post office branches as candidates for closing or consolidation. Fourteen of those branches are in Colorado:

    Aurora-Altura, Aurora-Fletcher, Aurora-Hoffman Heights, Boulder-Himar, Colorado Springs-Antares, Colorado Springs-North End, Colorado Springs-West End, Denver-Alcott, Denver-South Denver, Denver-Stockyards, Denver-Thornton, Denver-Wellshire, Fort Collins-Old Town, and Pueblo-Belmont.

The Postal Service’s report was given during a House subcommittee hearing on the future of mail delivery, which has been hit hard by an increase in e-mail and online payments. Other cost-cutting efforts may include decreased service hours and removing mail boxes.

Sources told the Washington Post privately that it was likely only 200 or so of the 677 branches would actually be closed.
