Everyone knows about Bike to Work Day, but what about Bike to Art Day?
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is organizing its first bicycle public art tour, slated for July 19, starting at 10 a.m. at City of Cuernavaca Park.
“It’s a continuation of the tours we’re already doing at Civic Center Park and the Denver Performing Arts Center,” said Rudi Cerri, who will be one of the tour guides. “The bicycle would be a way to cover a lot of ground.”
Interested participants need to reserve a spot with the tour, which will be limited to 15 people They’re expected to bring their own bicycle, food and water, and do their own repairs. They must also sign a release and wear a bicycle helmet.
The tour will mostly follow bike paths, although there will also be riding along the 16th Street Mall. About 20 to 25 pieces of public art — ranging from murals to sculpture — will be featured.
Cerri said he and another colleague will stop at each art piece and explain its history before riding on. The tour is expected to be about 3 miles long and will last about 2 1/2 hours.
Cerri said that there’s been a lot of interest in this tour, and most of the spots are already filled. He said that if there is increased interest, a few more bike tours could be organized this summer.
“We like to do more, but it’s a matter of recruiting more docents and getting them trained,” he said.
The Office of Cultural Affairs started conducting public art tours two years ago, mostly around DPAC and the Colorado Convention Center. This year, it added the Civic Center tour as well as the bicycle tour.
