The chips were down for a pet owner in England for six long years.

In a tale that would bite at any animal lover’s heart, Allsort the cat clawed out of the house and went missing.

But now, Allsort and her owner, Amy Turnbull, 34, have been reunited, thanks to one of those pet ID chips.

The wandering feline went on the lam from Turnbull’s home in Swindon, England, in 2003. After staying awhile with an elderly couple just a whisker’s breath away — about five blocks — Allsort eventually moved on to other owners. They took the stray to a vet, who found the implanted microchip and scratched out a letter to Turnbull.

Apparently, Allsort isn’t the only British cat that needs a homing beacon. In England, The Kennel Club — that really is its name — has a database to help furry waifs find their way home. So does the American Kennel Club.

Now, some people arch their backs and spit at the thought of chipping animals. And I have to admit I’m not sold on the idea, either — they’d have to wrap me in a towel to put one in me. But in this case, the ending seems just about pawfect.
