Meet RMI: Cindy House

RMI co-founder and editor Cindy House, a former Rocky Mountain News copy editor, visits Arizona's Meteor Crater.
Feb. 26, 2009, was a really bad day.
You see, when I and other Rocky Mountain News editors and reporters first began talking in January about creating a Web site that would carry on the paper’s journalistic tradition, I was blissfully ensconced in the Land of Denial. Not that I thought a Web site was a bad idea – quite the opposite, actually – but I was absolutely, positively certain that the Rocky would never close.
The Rocky’s final edition was published Feb. 27.
Say what you will about the reasons newspapers are failing. Everyone has a theory, and many are quite valid. But no matter how much time we spend analyzing bottom lines and gnashing our teeth over Craigslist, it doesn’t change one basic principle: People still need the news that matters to them.
That’s what we’re aiming to provide with the Rocky Mountain Independent: the news that matters to you, the news you may not find anywhere else. Are we going to stumble along the way? Yes, almost certainly. And I hope you’ll let us know when we do.
The days of sitting at the breakfast table and perusing the morning paper are waning. But the news is still here, and the digital era has given us a fantastic platform for it. Add the pioneer spirit of the West, and you have the perfect incubator for what could be the beginning of a new tradition.
So come on in, move that cup of coffee from your tabletop to your desktop, and stay awhile. I’m happy you’re here and glad you’re feeling independent.
