The Colorado Avalanche plans to retire Joe Sakic‘s No. 19 during the home opener of the 2009-10 season (time, date and opponent to be announced).
Sakic will be the third Avalanche player to have his sweater retired. Patrick Roy‘s No 33 and Ray Bourque‘s No. 77 (despite owning the number for little more than a season) also have been set aside. Four players who played their careers with the Quebec Nordiques before the franchise moved to Denver have had their numbers retired as well: Peter Stastny‘s No. 26, Michel Goulet’s No 16, Marc Tardif‘s No, 8 and J.C. Tremblay‘s No. 3.
Sakic announced his retirement Thursday.
