Orbiting camera snaps pics of moon landing sites

For those who stubbornly believe that the Apollo moon landings were a hoax, here’s some photo proof to the contrary.

Just in time for Monday’s 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, NASA has released the first images of this and other Apollo landing sites courtesy of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

You can see two of the sites in the photos above. Look closely and you’ll see the shadows cast by the lunar modules, which stayed on the moon’s surface after the astronauts returned to their command modules. More photos from other Apollo missions are available on NASA’s Web site, and one of them even shows astronaut footprints.

Once the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter reaches its final mapping orbit next month, it will take higher-resolution pictures of the sites.
