- Rockies’ Helton has a day to remember (Steve Foster) — We’re going to be talking for the next few hours about Todd Helton’s 500th double, which he hit in the third inning of Wednesday’s 4-3 win against the Diamondbacks. But it’s the hit in the eighth inning — his 321st home run, a solo shot that gave the Rockies its final lead — that probably deserves the attention.
- Neck & breakfast: Family’s home a giraffe hotel (John Moore) — A family in Nairobi, Kenya is living with eight giraffes — and the animals seem to think it’s the perfect spot. The lumbering giraffes roam a 140-acre estate owned by the Carr-Hartley family. And when meal time comes, they stroll up to the English-style manor house and poke their heads through the windows and doors to eat — right off the dining room table.
- Superstition lies in solar eclipse’s shadow (Cindy House) — Millions of people across Asia and the Pacific Ocean were witness to a total solar eclipse Wednesday as the moon crossed between Earth and the sun. It lasted more than six minutes in some places and is the longest such eclipse of the 21st century. The eclipse sent people scurrying outside to see it, but it also prompted some hysteria.
- Future Rockies too valuable to be dealt (Steve Foster) — Baseball America’s John Manuel includes Colorado Rockies pitching prospects Esmil Rogers and Jhoulys Chacin among his list of major league prospects to valuable to be dealt at baseball’s trade deadline. But he asks an interesting question: if the Rockies could get Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays for only these two prospects, should they make the deal?
