Rockies bullpen still needs help

Much has been made recently about how good the Rockies bullpen has been since Jim Tracy took over as manager. It’s true that other than a couple severe meltdowns the past two Saturdays, the numbers have been good for the relievers. Huston Street has been untouchable for stretches. Manny Corpas finally had righted his season before being forced to the disabled list. Joel Peralta has been surprisingly effective, and Matt Daley, while not as dominant as when first called up this season, had been solid until allowing runs in four of his past six appearances.

But beyond the numbers, there’s trouble. Street has been called on so often at times that he then needs to sit for consecutive games. Beyond Street, Peralta and Daley, the Rockies have seemed reluctant to use the rest of their bullpen: Josh Fogg, who hasn’t pitched in 12 days, Randy Flores, Alan Embree and Juan Rincon have been used sparingly under Tracy, although Embree and Rincon have seen more action in the past few games with mixed results.

With exciting young arms like Franklin Morales, Esmil Rogers and Jhoulys Chacin — not to mention Brandon Hynick, who, while not as dominant as the others, pitched a perfect game last week for Colorado Springs — waiting in the minors, how much longer can the Rockies continue to turn relievers that no one else wanted?
