Esmil Rogers, one of the Colorado Rockies’ top pitching prospects, started his first game for Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday. Rogers, who was 8-2 with a 2.48 ERA in 15 starts at Tulsa, took the win for the Sky Sox against Salt Lake. Rogers pitched six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, walking none and striking out five.

Rogers, a converted infielder, was listed as the seventh top prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America in its 2009 Prospect Handbook. From BA’s scouting report:

“For a converted player, Rogers has adapted well to the craft of pitching. He has a solid delivery and good arm action, producing a 92-94 mph fastball with late life. The curveball came quickly. It has a hard break and can be a strikeout pitch. He has shown solid control. Rogers’ inexperience with pitching shows in nuances such as defense and holding runners. The only below-average pitch in his arsenal is a changeup, which lacks consistency.”
