Colorado Rockies add Jason Giambi, Russ Ortiz
The Colorado Rockies have turned to former MVP Jason Giambi for potential help off the bench. Tracy Ringolsby at InsideTheRockies.com reports that Giambi, who was released by the Oakland Athletics earlier this month, will join Triple-A Colorado Springs to get regular at-bats with the idea that he would be activated when the roster expands on Sept. 1.
Giambi hit .193 with the A’s this season.

In another move, the Rockies added veteran pitcher Russ Ortiz, who will also pitch at Colorado Springs and be available when the rosters expand. Ortiz gives the Rockies another option to replace Aaron Cook, who went on the disabled list Saturday, in the starting rotation. At the very least, he gives the Rockies better insurance against injury than they had in 2007 when injuries forced them to turn to Elmer Dessens down the stretch. Ortiz made his debut at Colorado Springs on Sunday and pitched four solid innings.
