Dinner by candlelight . . . and cancer

Next time you plan a romantic candlelight dinner for you and your sweetie, you may want to think about using a different form of mood lighting. A new study says that the fumes from paraffin wax candles can be poisonous and carcinogenic.
Paraffin candles are made from petroleum. The researchers burned these candles in a small, enclosed area, then measured the toxic fumes emitted. They said that burning paraffin candles occasionally around your house is OK, but burning them every day or using them frequently in unventilated areas such as bathrooms may put you at risk.
The researchers also tested beeswax and soy candles and found that they don’t emit the harmful fumes. They may be pricier, but what price love, right?
Actually, that’s a different project. A new book sets the value of being in a stable relationship at 163,424 British pounds (that’s $269,658.53 in Thursday’s exchange rate). And that’ll buy you about 18,100 soy candles.
