Kmart scoops Sony on PlayStation price cut

A few hours before Sony was widely expected to announce a new, slimmer (and much cheaper) version of its gaming console, a Kmart ad for said product began appearing.
The ad linked to a pre-order listing that offered the PS3 Slim at $299.99, well below the $399 cost for the 80GB version of the console and the $499 cost of the 160GB version.
Sony did confirm at the 2009 Gamescom conference in Germany that the PS3 Slim will be available at $299 by the first week of September, according to a live blog from Kotaku.com. It will have a 120GB drive and is smaller and lighter than the older models, which will see price cuts starting Wednesday.
Sony’s PlayStation 3 has been slow to gain traction among gaming consoles because of its hefty price tag. Competitors Wii and Xbox 360 sell for $250 and $299, respectively.
