Pitch to be ‘world’s loudest’ can make you scream

In space, no one can hear you scream.
But these folks have screams that you might be able to hear from space.
About 1,500 loudmouths went vocal cord to vocal cord over the weekend at an international competition in Pattaya, Thailand. They were trying to set a record for the world’s loudest scream.
When the yelling was over, Russian Sergey Savelyev, 33, had something to shout about. He won by reaching an ear-splitting 116.8 decibels — about as loud as an ambulance siren.
Savelyev walked away with a check worth about $900 from the scream-off, which was hosted by Thailand’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. However, he didn’t yell his way to a record.
The Guinness World Record for the loudest scream by an individual is a thundering 129 decibels, set by Jill Drake in London in 2000. That’s about 10 decibels lower than a jet engine. For a crowd, the loudness record is 127.2 decibels, screamed by a group of Scouts in Finland in 2005.
Fortunately for those watching the competition this past weekend, pain doesn’t usually begin until 125 decibels. But the cringe factor can start well before that.
