Poker: gambling or skill? Court may decide
A poker game in Greeley that resulted in five arrests for illegal gambling, could wind up before the Colorado Supreme Court. The case resulted in the acquittal of one of those arrested while the charges against the others were later dropped. At the trial, a University of Denver professor testified poker is a game of skill and not gambling.
To clarify Colorado law for future prosecutions, the state appealed the ruling to allow the professor to testify. A district court ruled that the professor’s testimony should not have been allowed because poker is already defined as gambling under Colorado law.
The Denver Post reports that a poker advocacy group will petition the Supreme Court to review the district court’s ruling about the nature of poker.
