“Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers,” but the recession and the rise of online commerce apparently will.

Last Thursday, I posted here that 14 post office branches in Colorado were on the potential chopping block as part of the U.S. Postal Service’s efforts to cut costs.

This week, there are only four Colorado branches that could be closed: Aurora-Hoffman Heights; Westminster-Harris Park; Fort Collins-Old Town; and Pueblo-Belmont. Spared from closing are branches in Denver, Colorado Springs and Boulder.

I’d love to be able to link to the Postal Service’s complete list of stations under review, but this topic is so popular that the Postal Regulatory Commission’s Web site seems to have crashed.

And the loss of local post offices isn’t the only thing on the Postal Service’s paring list. Up for approval in Congress is cutting mail delivery to five days a week. Yep, no Saturdays.

The Postal Service is facing an operating loss of $6 billion to $12 billion this year, so potential cost cuts should come as no surprise.

I also imagine we’re likely to see another postage hike soon.
