Top 10 Cash for Clunkers purchases: compacts, hybrids

A list of the top 10 cars purchased under the government’s Cash for Clunkers rebate program has been released, and compact cars and hybrids are leading the way:
1. Ford Focus
2. Toyota Corolla
3. Honda Civic
4. Toyota Prius
5. Toyota Camry
6. Ford Escape
7. Hyundai Elantra
8. Dodge Caliber
9. Honda Fit
10. Chevy Cobalt
The data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has helped alleviate concerns in Congress that Cash for Clunkers wasn’t really helping the nation’s fuel efficiency all that much.
However, since four of the top five vehicles on the list are from foreign carmakers, the data add fuel to critics’ contention that the rebate program is helping Asian manufacturers Honda and Toyota at the expense of struggling American carmakers GM and Chrysler.
