A little decorum, please

The now infamous “You lie!” outburst by Rep. Joe Wilson last week during Barack Obama’s speech to Congress on health care reform seems to have triggered an outbreak of similarly bad behavior.

Over the weekend, tennis star Serena Williams got in the face of a line judge whose call she disagreed with. She made her displeasure abundantly known with liberal use of the f-word, spurring a fine and the loss of her U.S. Open title.

Rounding out the disrespectful trifecta, Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards, proclaiming that fellow nominee “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!”

As you might expect, apologies for all three incidents are flying fast and furiously.

Granted, we’ve almost come to expect outrageous behavior from tennis stars (John McEnroe, anyone?) and from Kanye at awards shows — although, generally he pitches a fit when he’s the one who doesn’t win.

As you might expect, the apologies have been flying fast and furiously. Goodness knows, we’ve all had episodes we’re not particularly proud of. Maybe it really is the heat of the moment. Or an urgent cry for attention. Or a little too much Jack and not enough Coke.

It doesn’t really matter. Because, in the end, when you act this way, you’re the only one who looks like a loser.
