Broncos’ QB Orton could miss opener

After new Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton’s first few performances of the preseason, many fans were hoping he wouldn’t be the team’s starter. They may have gotten their wish, but in circumstances that create serious problems for the Broncos on the depth chart.

Orton suffered a dislocated right index finger in Sunday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears and could miss the team’s season opener Sept. 13 at the Cincinnati Bengals.

Chris Simms, who was supposed to be Orton’s primary backup, has been out with an ankle sprain. He is recovering faster than expected, and might be ready for the opener. Without Orton or Simms, the Broncos would turn to either rookie Tom Brandstater or veteran Ingle Martin.
