Calif. wildfire smoke spurs Colorado health alert

Smoke from wildfires in California and other parts of the West and Canada has drifted over Colorado, prompting the state health department to issue a smoke health advisory for the northwest and north-central parts of the state.

The advisory says that the air quality in these areas is “unhealthy for sensitive groups”: people with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young and the elderly.

Elsewhere in the state, “moderate” concentrations of smoke have produced haze for much of Tuesday. The smoke is expected to dissipate through this evening but could come back from time to time this week.

NOAA satellite data at about 6 p.m. Tuesday showed a large patch of dense smoke over Colorado’s central eastern plains.
