Denver Seen: A post 9/11 moment

The procession was somber.

It was only four days after the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and a thousand or so Coloradans had gathered on the steps of the state Capitol to share their grief, their pride in America and their determination to fight back. Now they were leaving.

A policeman stood along the parade route, blocking traffic for the marchers, his badge black-draped in honor of the fallen cops and firefighters of New York. Spontaneously, a hand came out of the stream of people to take his hand and shake it. Then another. Then another.

As I brought the camera up to my eye, I stooped slightly to put myself on the level of the most important thing in the picture — the gesture of the meeting hands.
