Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park will represent the state in a new series of quarters that the U.S. Mint will begin rolling out next year.

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program will honor some of the nation’s most treasured natural sites. However, you will have to wait until 2014 to see the Colorado coin.

In all, 56 state-themed quarter designs will be produced for the series, which will feature images of national parks and other national sites. Three of next year’s coins will focus on Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon national parks, representing Wyoming, California and Arizona.

The quarters will be released in the order in which the featured location became a national park or site. Five new designs will appear each year through 2020. The final coin, honoring the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama, will be issued in 2021.

The series is a follow-up to the mint’s 50 State Quarters Program, which started in 1999 and ended last year. Colorado’s state quarter was released in 2006 and features an image of a mountain based on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park.

This year, the mint is producing quarters honoring the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories.
