A Denver-based terror cell is at the heart of an FBI probe that triggered raids Monday in New York City, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

The cell allegedly is plotting a 9/11-style attack, and the Daily News says hundreds of FBI agents are in Colorado conducting surveillance on five suspects. A local FBI spokeswoman declined to comment about the report to the Denver Post.

Anti-terror task force agents were seeking bomb-making materials in Monday’s raids on three residences in Queens. The raids were triggered when a suspect from Denver traveled to New York, allegedly seeking those bomb-making materials, the New York Post reported. No explosives or weapons were found.

Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, who was briefed on the raids, told The New York Times that there was no truth to reports that the raids were spurred by an imminent terrorist attack or tied to a visit to New York City by Barack Obama on Monday.

There were conflicting reports Tuesday afternoon about the Denver suspect’s nationality as well as the timeline of events leading to Monday’s raids.
