The Steamboat Pilot & Today notes another unintended consequence of the "Cash for Clunkers" has emerged in recent days. Because the cars traded in under the program must have their engine disabled -- other parts of the car can be recycled -- the pool of used cars is shrinking.

When a Cash for Clunkers car is traded in, it won't spend the rest of its existence rusting in a junkyard. Instead, usable parts and materials will be recycled as part of the scrapping process.

UPDATE: The Obama administration said Friday that the program would be good at least through the end of the day. After less than a week in operation, lawmakers say the program is being suspended because the money's nearly gone.
