The truth is, neither Jon Garland nor Jose Contreras is exactly what the Rockies need right now, but at least Contreras comes at the right price. What the Rockies need is their hitters to start hitting, and adding a fifth starter wasn't going to help that much.

It's probably a good sign that ESPN is starting to hear the grumbling about its ignorance of nearly all things Middle America, not that it will change anything. ESPN is what it is: a division of a multinational conglomerate that approaches news the way its movie divisions approach film.

Obviously, it would have been better if the Colorado Rockies had won Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But as losses go, this wasn't a terrible one.

The good news is that ESPN.com finally noticed the Colorado Rockies exist. The bad news is they did so only long enough to reassure their coastal following that that the big-market Los Angeles Dodgers have nothing to worry about from the Rockies.

The Colorado Rockies' run in 2007 was exciting, but not many fans noticed until it was almost over. In just five games in all of the 2007 regular season did the team draw big on their own merits.
